Researching and Discussing Ready-mades
Conference "Make No Mistake! Error in Art – 2nd edition", Budapest
Our team member Dora Derado recently came took part in the international conference "Make No Mistake" which was held on November 24 – 25, 2018 at the Venue: FUGA Budapest Centre of Architecture in Budapest. There, she held a talk entitled "Accidents, Artistic Intent and Error" which presented a segment of her research for her doctoral thesis.
In her paper, she put forward works by predominantly Croatian artists and from the former Republic of Yugoslavia who followed in Duchamp's footsteps and experimented with haphazardness and chance by employing new artistic techniques that left room for (intentional) error and chance or challenged the role of artist and spectator by exploiting the latter to do their work for them (partially or in its entirety). Presented were are also those instances of artworks that are seemingly unintentional but hide a great deal of intent, which results, yet again, in an interpretational chasm. Some names included in this study are protagonists of the post-WWII Croatian art scene and include Ivo Gattin, Goran Trbuljak, Braco Dimitrijević, and Tomislav Gotovac, who were involved in emerging art movements such as Art Informel, Conceptual art and the neo-avant-garde respectively.
Researching Ready-mades in Zagreb
Dora also recently just got back from her fieldwork in Zagreb where she went through the Fine Arts Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the library and permanent collection of artworks at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb and the library of the Institute for the research of the avant-garde in Zagreb. In the Institute, she also had the opportunity to sit down and talk with the founder of the Institute, Marinko Sudac (also the owner of the Marinko Sudac collection and author of the Virtual Museum of Avant-Garde).
During her research, some new questions opened up for her doctoral thesis and new light was shed upon the works and exhibitions of several artists she has been looking into with regards to her work on the phenomenon of the ready-made in Croatian art of the 20th century.
We wish her the best with her future research and doctoral thesis!
