From Dover to Durham

One of the Crosculpture team members, Daniel Zec spent 14 days (July 4 - 18) conducting field research in England, which was possible thanks to the Croatian Science Foundation, as part of his PhD research.

He also attended a conference, presenting some of his recent work at the Portraiture Conference at Durham University (July 13 - 15) where he presented a paper entitled “Portraits and (in) institutions: Example of Oscar Nemon”.

The places and institutions he visited, in relation to the Crosculpture project and the subject of his PhD (the life and work of Oscar Nemon), include:

In Oxfordshire: Oscar Nemon Archive and Museum Studio at Pleasant Land, Boar’s Hill, Oxford Union in Oxford, Blenheim Palace.
Near London: Cookham, Windsor Castle.
In Kent: St Margaret's Bay, Westerham, Chartwell. In London: Institute of Psychoanalysis, Carlton Club, New Zealand House, Freud Museum (attended the Patron's night with Simon Schama), Westminster Palace – House of Commons Members Lobby, Whitehall, Victoria Embankment, Jewish Museum, Tate Britain, Grocers Hall, Guildhall, Tate Modern, National Portrait Gallery Store, South London.

Some of his time was also spent going through the literature on portrait sculpture at the British Library in London, which we are sure will prove useful for the Crosculpture team's preparations for our lexicon of Modern sculpure and our monographic publication (more on that in the future).

From what Daniel tells us, the trip seems to have been equal parts business and pleasure. If only everyone's work could also be their source of pleasure.
